Oscar-winning actor James Cagney raised Morgans at several farms across the U.S., including one in Stanfordville, NY (Dutchess County). Cagney purchased the property in 1955, dubbed it Verney Farm, and lived there until he passed in 1986.
The memorial marker for Justin Morgan’s (the horse) grave is located at 30 Harolyn Hill Road in Chelsea, VT. The horse’s actual burial site is unknown but is somewhere on the farm of the late Harold and Marilyn Childs.
The original Tony, the equine co-star of silent screen cowboy Tom Mix, was said to be a son of Headlight Morgan and even received his own fan mail.
Rienzi, a descendant of Black Hawk, was acclaimed in a famous poem and painting (“Sheridan’s Ride”) by Thomas Buchanon Read. He was ridden by Union Gen. Philip H. Sheridan, who later changed the horse’s name to Winchester.
